How I manage money

Finance docs from before I bought a house. Updated for the current setup: MyState mortgage with offset, Vanguard investments, McDonald's income.

Sensitive numbers change — check banking apps for live balances. Full street address is intentionally not in this doc; see Vaultwarden for lender account details.

Current strategy (2026)

Bucket Where Purpose
Home loan offset MyState Primary savings — every dollar here reduces interest
Investments Vanguard Long-term growth outside the offset
Day-to-day spending Macquarie (legacy accounts may still exist) Bills and card

Offset balance: ~$31k (check MyState app for exact figure)

Everything that is not needed for immediate spending or Vanguard contributions goes into the offset account first. That is the emergency fund and savings in one place — mortgage interest saved beats most savings account rates.

Income

McDonald's only now — Product Quality Manager at the Sunbury store. See Career.

The old Woolworths split (50/50 paycheck routing) is retired.

Home loan

  • Lender: MyState
  • Property: Sunbury, Victoria (details in Vaultwarden / settlement docs)
  • Offset: primary place cash sits (~$31k) — see MyState offset

Old Macquarie "Savings (Use)" / "Savings (Don't Use)" / separate emergency fund at uBank logic applied before the house purchase. See Saving (archived) for the pre-2024 strategy.

Investments

Vanguard — ongoing contributions. No Blossom, no Frollo anymore. Details: Vanguard.

Monthly habits

Short version — full checklist: Monthly checklist.

  • Check offset balance after pay cycles
  • Top up Vanguard on schedule
  • Use Finder or similar occasionally to sanity-check whether Macquarie savings rates matter for any float still sitting outside offset
