Notify insurance and utilities

After Saxon died, companies that insure or supply the home need to know. Some policies must be updated quickly. Others can wait a few days.

This guide uses no policy numbers — check mail, email, or Vaultwarden.

Why this matters

  1. Car insurance — driving or leaving a car uninsured can be illegal in Victoria.
  2. Home/building insurance — may be required by MyState mortgage.
  3. Utilities — power and internet keep the TrueNAS server and home safe if someone still lives there.
  4. Wrong details — bills in Saxon's name can delay refunds or cause cut-offs.

Before you call anyone

  1. Death certificate (or interim) — many insurers want a copy.
  2. Property address — Sunbury, Victoria (full street address in Vaultwarden or mail).
  3. Your role — next of kin, executor, or person managing the estate.
  4. Pen and paper — write reference numbers they give you.

Mortgage lender

MyState may need separate notification for the loan and any loan protection insurance. See Contact banks.

Car insurance

Saxon had car insurance — details should be filled in on car insurance doc. Insurer name may be on registration papers or renewal mail.

Steps

  1. Find insurer name (mail, Vaultwarden, or windscreen sticker).
  2. Call the claims or policy line — many have a bereavement or policy change option.
  3. Say Saxon Brooker, policyholder, has died. Give date of death.
  4. Ask:
  5. Does cover continue for the estate temporarily?
  6. What is needed to cancel or transfer when the car is sold?
  7. Is anyone allowed to drive the car until then?
  8. Send death certificate if they ask.
  9. Update billing to estate contact if cover continues.

Do not drive uninsured

If the insurer stops cover immediately, do not drive the car until new cover is arranged.

Home insurance

Saxon may have building and/or contents insurance (separate from the car). Check:

  • Mail at Sunbury
  • MyState mortgage documents (sometimes lender-arranged insurance)
  • Vaultwarden secure notes

Steps

  1. Identify insurer and policy type (building / contents / combined).
  2. Notify them of Saxon's death.
  3. Confirm the Sunbury property stays covered while occupied or empty.
  4. Ask about vacant home rules if nobody lives there.
  5. Ask if MyState must be listed as interested party on payouts.

Utilities

Electricity and gas

  1. Find bills — paper mail or email (Vaultwarden may have utility login).
  2. Call retailer name on bill (e.g. Origin, AGL, etc. — your bill shows the exact name).
  3. Report death; ask to transfer account name to estate or occupant.
  4. Keep supply on if anyone lives in the home or the server room needs climate control.

Water

  1. Sunbury area — often Western Water or successor (check bill).
  2. Same process: notify death, transfer account, avoid disconnection if home is occupied.

Internet

Home internet keeps Wi‑Fi, remote access to docs, and the Cloudflare tunnel to the server working.

  1. Find NBN retailer on bill (Telstra, Aussie Broadband, etc.).
  2. Notify death; transfer billing contact.
  3. Do not cancel until you decide the house is sold or empty long-term.
  4. If internet drops, homelab sites like vault.saxobroko.com may be unreachable from outside — local Wi‑Fi still works for Physical equipment map devices.

McDonald's HR may mention super death benefit — not utility insurance, but related call: Contact McDonald's.

If this goes wrong

You cannot find any insurance papers

  • Check email in Vaultwarden. Ask MyState if loan-required building insurance exists.

Utility cut off unexpectedly

  • Call retailer urgently with death certificate; ask reconnection and back-billing to estate.

Insurer refuses to speak to you

  • Normal without executor papers. Ask minimum needed to maintain legal cover.

Two people pay the same bill

  • Pick one payer; cancel duplicate after transfer.
