First 24 hours
This page is for the first day after Saxon has died. Go slowly. You do not need to solve everything at once.
Before you do anything else
- Make sure you are safe and supported. Call someone you trust. Grief is exhausting.
- If Saxon died at home and you are unsure what to do, call 000 (Australia) or follow advice from a doctor, palliative care nurse, or funeral director.
- Do not rush to "clean up" his phone, computer, or server. Data on those devices may be needed for banks, work, and the will.
You are reading Saxon's own documentation
Saxon built this site (docs.saxobroko.com) so family would not be lost. It is okay if none of this makes sense yet.
In the first few hours
- Contact immediate family — whoever should know first.
- Contact a funeral director when you are ready. They guide death certificates and arrangements.
- Secure Saxon's home — lock doors and windows. Leave devices plugged in where they were.
- Locate the will. A copy is documented at will.md in this docs site. There may also be a paper copy at home — check with family or a solicitor.
- Keep Saxon's phone charged. Do not factory-reset it. Messages and apps may matter later.
Do not do these yet
| Do not… | Why |
|---|---|
| Wipe or sell the PC, NAS, or phone | Ryan inherits all tech; evidence and passwords may live there |
| Cancel every subscription today | Some (insurance, utilities) still protect the home |
| Log into bank apps guessing passwords | Lockouts make things harder — use Vaultwarden when ready |
| Delete Cloudflare, GitHub, or domain accounts | They keep docs.saxobroko.com and email working |
| Go through all photos immediately | Saxon warned that some photos may upset people — see will |
What you can safely do today
- Read Read the will and Who gets what — short summaries of Saxon's wishes.
- Write down questions for the funeral director, solicitor, and McDonald's HR.
- Find Saxon's YubiKeys — small USB security keys. They unlock vault.saxobroko.com. See YubiKeys.
- Tell McDonald's when you can — see Contact McDonald's. Saxon was Product Quality Manager at the Sunbury restaurant.
Home tech — leave it alone for now
Saxon ran a home server and network. You do not need to understand it today.
| Device | Where | What it is (simple) |
|---|---|---|
| UniFi Dream Machine SE | Near the internet connection | Router — gives Wi‑Fi |
| TrueNAS box (Ugreen DXP 8800) | Where Saxon kept the server | Stores files, photos, movies |
| Windows PC | Desk | Saxon's daily computer |
If the power is on and nothing is beeping, leave it. See Physical equipment map when you want a map.
Day 2 and beyond (not urgent)
When you have capacity, work through these in any sensible order:
- Contact banks
- Notify insurance and utilities
- Cancel subscriptions overview
- Where passwords live — with Ryan's help
If this goes wrong
You accidentally restarted or unplugged the server
- Plug it back in. Wait ten minutes. It usually comes back on its own.
- Do not open the case or pull out hard drives.
- If it will not start, note any red lights and ask Ryan or a tech friend. See Turn everything on.
You cannot open docs.saxobroko.com
- The site needs a login through Cloudflare Access. Follow Open the docs site.
- If that fails, the same files may exist in Saxon's GitHub — ask Ryan.
Family members are arguing about money or the PC
- Point everyone to Read the will. Tech goes to Ryan (cannot sell). Money has special rules — not a free-for-all for family.
You feel pressured to "fix the IT" immediately
- Stop. McDonald's, banks, and the funeral matter more. Homelab guides can wait a week.
