When media won't play

This guide is for Jellyfin at stream.saxobroko.com — when a show will not start, buffers forever, or says the server is unavailable.

Music problems: Navidrome for beginners.

Step 1 — Check the basics

  1. Confirm home internet works — open google.com on the same device.
  2. If google fails: When internet is broken.
  3. Confirm you are opening stream.saxobroko.com (not an old Plex bookmark).
  4. Log in if Jellyfin asks. Credentials are in Vaultwarden (search Jellyfin).
  5. If a login page for Authentik appears first, sign in at auth.saxobroko.com — then retry Jellyfin.

Step 2 — Try another title or device

  1. Pick a different movie or episode you know worked before.
  2. Try the Windows PC browser first (most reliable on the home network).
  3. If the PC works but the TV or phone does not:
  4. Update the Jellyfin app, or
  5. Use the browser on that device instead of the app.

This tells you whether the problem is one device or the whole server.

Step 3 — Is the NAS awake?

Jellyfin runs on the TrueNAS NAS. If the NAS was just rebooted, apps need time.

  1. Open dsm.saxobroko.com on the PC.
  2. If it loads, the NAS is on. If not: Turn everything on.
  3. Wait 10 minutes after NAS boot, then refresh Jellyfin.

Step 4 — Refresh the Jellyfin page

  1. In the browser, press Ctrl+F5 (hard refresh) on Windows.
  2. Or close the tab and open stream.saxobroko.com again.
  3. Try Play again.

Step 5 — "Server unavailable" at home

If Jellyfin fails on home Wi‑Fi but internet otherwise works:

  1. NAS may still be starting — wait 10 minutes.
  2. The Jellyfin app container on TrueNAS may have stopped — a technical person can restart it under Apps in TrueNAS (same place as cloudflared).
  3. Check dash.saxobroko.com — if the Jellyfin tile is red or missing, the service is down.

Step 6 — Works at home, fails on phone data (outside)

Two common causes:

Cause What it means What to do
Australia-only rule Most homelab sites block access from outside Australia Connect from Australia, or use home network
Tunnel down cloudflared not connecting Restart cloudflared

If you are in Australia on mobile data and it still fails, try Step 6 in Restart cloudflared.

Step 7 — New show not in the list

If the show never appears (not a playback error):

  1. Someone may need to request it — Request a movie or show.
  2. Downloads take time. Wait a day unless you know it was already added.
  3. Technical path: library scan on Jellyfin — see Common issues — Jellyfin.
