Vanguard

Long-term investing lives here — separate from the MyState offset, which is where cash earns its keep day to day.

Why Vanguard

I moved off Blossom and Frollo years ago. Vanguard stuck because:

  • Low fees — index-style products without the old app middleman
  • Australian platform — AUD accounts, local tax reporting, no overseas brokerage faff
  • Set and forget — regular contributions into diversified funds, not stock picking

The offset still wins for anything I might need in the next few years. Vanguard is for money I do not expect to touch for a long time.

Contribution rhythm

Income is McDonald's only now — see Career. There is no Woolworths split anymore.

Rough pattern:

  1. After pay cycles — confirm the offset buffer is still around target (~$31k) before moving anything out
  2. On schedule — transfer a fixed amount from surplus cash into Vanguard (same rhythm each month or fortnight, whichever matches the pay calendar)
  3. Do not drain the offset — investments only happen when the buffer is healthy

Exact dollar amounts change with pay and expenses. Check banking apps for live figures; this doc only describes the habit.

Fund types (high level)

I hold a small number of Vanguard managed funds / ETFs — broad Australian and international equity exposure, nothing exotic. Typical buckets:

Type Role
Australian shares index Home-market growth
International shares index Diversification outside Australia
Bonds / defensive (if held) Stability — only if the portfolio mix calls for it

No need to list every ticker here. The Vanguard dashboard shows current holdings and allocation. Strategy is boring on purpose: diversify, contribute, ignore noise.
